PADDLING AND WHITEWATER RAFTING
Situated between the Isokurkkio and Vähäkurkkio rivers, Lapland Hide is near the best and most diverse natural river environments in the country for enjoying paddling and whitewater rafting, all the while experiencing the untouched nature of Lapland up close and at its most authentic.
Paddling The rivers and lakes in the area are sure to provide the perfect waters for every level of paddler. For example, the slow 10-mile downstream section of Lätäseno River from Vähäkurkkio to Markkina is ideal for hopping into a kayak or canoe for the first time to spark your interest in the hobby.
Once you know the basics, you can move on to more demanding rapids as a member of a guided Lapland Hide paddling group. The many rapids of Lätäseno River provide an exhilarating and eye-watering ride, but the most challenging sections can also be bypassed by land, should you feel less inclined to throw yourself into heart-pounding adventure. Exploring the river as part of a paddling group also improves the team work skills required to navigate the rapids.
During your stay at Lapland Hide, you can learn about paddling under an instructor or enjoy paddling independently. Lapland Hide organizes basic paddling courses and guided paddling tours by order.
Whitewater rafting Lapland Hide arranges whitewater rafting sessions on the Lätäseno and Könkämäeno rivers by order. You can experience the unique thrill of hurtling through beautiful nature on class III rapids – possibly even under the magical midnight sun. A great way for your group to get the best out of the experience is to first paddle from Lapland Hide to Könkämäeno River on kayaks, navigate the rapids on a raft and return to Lapland Hide on river boats for unwinding in the riverside sauna and a dip in the pristine Arctic waters.
Be sure to book the special activities well in advance to enjoy a memorable wilderness adventure provided by Lapland Hide!
Birdwatching
As Lätäseno River sheds its ice cover in late May, the long-lasting quiet of the wilderness is broken by the territorial calls of returning migratory birds. The water areas are quickly filled with all manner of sound – the bluethroat singing in the lush birch groves by the river, the unmistakable mating calls of cranes and the piercing whoops of swans. In mere days, all kinds of feathered creatures, from waders and waterfowls to small insect-eating birds, flock to their old haunts from the south. This also spells the beginning of a veritable feast for birds of prey, such as the golden eagle, white-tailed eagle, long-tailed jaeger and a variety of hawks and owls – especially in years when the lemmings and voles are plentiful.
A world of avian beauty The Lätäseno-Hietajoki swamp conservation area surrounding Lapland Hide is a valued bird habitat, which is listed as one of the globally important bird areas (IBA). Exploring the stunning fells in the area, the closest of which is Ruossakero, you can even spot the majestic golden eagle! You may not need to go further than the yard to sea a wood grouse looking for a morsel to eat – the most common sight in the area is the Siberian jay, however.
Birdwatching holiday at Lapland Hide Lapland Hide provides the opportunity to take a helicopter to visit the best cliffside nesting grounds in the area as well as the furthest wetlands and fell habitats in the Käsivarsi and Tarvantovaara wilderness areas, which are home to a variety of bird species rarely seen in other parts. On order, we also organize seabird watching trips to the Arctic Ocean. Visit us with your bird enthusiast friends to experience the pinnacle of birdwatching delight!
