From winter to Spring

The deep blue of the polar night, the glistening snow, and above all, complete privacy are what make this place truly special. When the river ice breaks in spring, it becomes a nature's spectacle of its own.

In addition to snow grouse hunting, the winter wilderness invites exploration — by snowmobile, on ice-fishing trips, or during peaceful snowshoe treks. We can arrange all necessary equipment rentals, and guided snowmobile arrivals are also available in winter.

And what would Lapland’s winter be without the Northern Lights? Far from city lights, Lapland Hide offers perfect conditions to witness their magnificent glow.

From summer to autumn

During the Midnight Sun, Lapland’s nature is filled with light and vitality. The grand fells of Finnish Lapland, the pure Lätäsenojoki River, and the surrounding wilderness offer countless ways to experience the cleanest air in Europe.

Enjoy fishing, hunting, hiking, the silence of the riverside, or a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters — every day reveals a new side of Lapland.

From July to August, the focus is on fishing, while from September to early winter, it turns to snow grouse hunting. More information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Fishing

Lapland Hide is located near the best fishing waters in Finland. The area is rife with premium-quality fish, such as Arctic char, trout, grayling and freshwater whitefish, as well as Baltic salmon and sea trout that migrate to the clear rivers running through the fells. This means that Lapland Hide guests get to enjoy amazing opportunities for fly and lure fishing as well as guided fishing tours throughout the North-western strip of Finnish Lapland. Guests can also take part in net fishing on the nearby rivers and lakes, under the expert instruction of our guide. If needed, Lapland Hide can assist you with getting the necessary fishing permits.
For summer fishing, an Angling Permit for the Käsivarsi area (permit no. 1551) is required.
Rod fishing and ice fishing are part of Finland’s Everyman’s Rights and are therefore free of charge, except in rapids and streams containing salmon or whitefish. Fly and lure fishing are permitted with the Kelottijärvi Joint Waters Association fishing license. The salmon that migrate to the Lätäsenojoki River through the Tornionjoki are one of the few remaining natural Baltic salmon populations. The salmon ascend the wilderness rivers of Käsivarsi as far as the Poroeno River. Net fishing for salmon is completely prohibited in both the Lätäsenojoki and Poroeno rivers.

The fly and lure fishing permit also allows fishing in the Könkämäeno River — for approximately 60 kilometers upstream from the mouth of the Lätäsenojoki towards Kilpisjärvi. All persons aged 18–64 are also required to have a personal state fishing license. Lapland Hide is happy to assist with obtaining all necessary permits.

When fishing above Peeramukka, guests will need the Metsähallitus recreational fishing permit for the Lätäsenojoki area (permit no. 1550). Common catches include grayling, whitefish, Atlantic salmon, trout, and pike. The number of permits for the Metsähallitus area is limited.

The waters of the surrounding fells and valleys offer unforgettable fishing experiences throughout the Käsivarsi region. Lapland Hide arranges guided fishing trips to nearby rivers and lakes — on foot, by riverboat, snowmobiles, or helicopter — depending on guests’ preferences, the season, and weather conditions.

hunting

Lapland Hide brings the exceptional hunting grounds of the Käsivarsi wilderness within easy reach of its guests. Thanks to the roadless surroundings, areas that were once inaccessible are now just moments away.

Snow grouse, waterfowl, hare, and other small game can be hunted with Lapland Hide’s own permits, starting right beyond the lodge grounds. Helicopter transport can also take guests to the Metsähallitus permit areas across Käsivarsi — and even to the mountain regions of Swedish Lapland.

Hunting in the region is not restricted by the Wilderness Act or the Act on the Protection of Mires.

For non-local hunters, Metsähallitus grants a limited and quota-based number of hunting permits each year. The annual number of permits follows the principles of sustainable use. Metsähallitus consults annually with the local game management association, the Käsivarsi reindeer herding cooperative, tourism operators whose livelihood depends partly on hunting, and professional hunters where applicable. During the hunting season, hunters are expected to avoid disturbing reindeer herding activities.

For local residents of Enontekiö, grouse hunting is not subject to quotas, though it is guided by recommendations from the local game association, and the Lapland Game District may shorten the hunting season when necessary. Hunters voluntarily support sustainable populations by refraining from hunting in poor grouse years. Moose and bear hunting are strictly quota-based, with licenses adjusted according to population monitoring.

At Lapland Hide, the most sought-after game species is the snow grouse, which is common in the surrounding area. Of the forest grouse species, the capercaillie is part of the region’s game population, as is the bear, which appears occasionally and is subject to quota hunting. Hares and foxes are also common.

Metsähallitus encourages fox hunting for both game management and conservation reasons — as the red fox has nearly eradicated the endangered Arctic fox from the Käsivarsi region.

Waterfowl populations are relatively healthy, supported by the extensive wetland zones that stretch from Sweden across the Lätäsenojoki River into Norway. These vast fens and waterways — such as the nearby Hieta- and Puussasvuoma wetlands — form an important habitat for numerous waterfowl species.

Metsähallitus issues two types of small game hunting permits: a general small game permit, which covers all small game species (commonly known as the “grouse permit”), and a permit for small game other than grouse, which applies to waterfowl and hare hunting.

In addition, a snow grouse-specific permit (the “riekkolupa”) is available for the Upper Lapland region, covering the municipalities of Enontekiö, Utsjoki, and Inari. Hunting requires a personal hunting card, which must always be carried along with the permit conditions and area map while hunting, and must be presented upon request during inspection.
Transporting a firearm in motorized vehicles off-road is prohibited. However, the local police chief may grant permission in specific cases to carry a firearm by motor vehicle in the terrain, provided the weapon is not used for hunting. Under certain conditions, such permission may also be granted to reindeer herders performing herding duties.

The snow grouse permit does not authorize the hunting of capercaillie, black grouse, or hazel grouse. Rock ptarmigan must be spared due to their low population, and all forms of trapping are prohibited throughout the hunting season.

There are four types of small game hunting permits in Finland. Separate permits are available for grouse, waterfowl and hare, beaver, and small predators, but each permit also allows hunting of certain other small game species beyond those specifically mentioned.

For example, the grouse permit allows hunting of all small game species except beaver. The waterfowl and hare permit covers all small game except grouse and beaver. The beaver permit allows hunting of beaver as well as all small predators and unprotected species. The small predator permit allows hunting of small predators, wild boar, and other unprotected animals.
